Juventus put their perfect season on the line when they travel to Udinese for Serie A’s final match on Saturday. La Vecchia Signora are undefeated in their last five matches against Udinese, picking up four wins and a draw dating back to the beginning of 2016.
The hosts are coming off of consecutive 2-1 defeats and will look to shock the league leaders at the Stadio Friuli in what should be an exciting affair.
Udinese’s early season has provided a mixed bag of results, as they hold a 2W 2D 3L record after seven fixtures. All of their matches have been close affairs, with their 2-0 win at Chievo the only contest that was decided by more than one goal. Their last two times out saw them suffer a tight 2-1 home defeat to Lazio, while an 82nd-minute winner from Riccardo Orsolini gave Bologna a come-from-behind 2-1 win last Sunday. Their last four home games have produced a record of 2W 1D 1L, which is much better than the six consecutive defeats they surrendered towards the end of last season. Their past ten Serie A home games have produced an even 5/5 split on the over/under 2.5 total goals.
Juventus have been perfect in all competitions this season, picking up wins in all seven domestic matches, as well as their two Champions League games. Their last Serie A match was a massive 3-1 victory over 2nd-place Napoli, while they went into Bern to dismantle the Swiss champion Young Boys 3-0 this past Tuesday. Massimiliano Allegri’s boys have scored at least twice in each match this season, while keeping five clean sheets along the way. They remain undefeated in their past 16 domestic matches, grabbing 13 wins and three draws during that run. Ten of this fixtures have seen them maintain a clean sheet, while just six of 16 have gone over 2.5 total goals.
Last season’s game in Udinese saw Mario Mandzukic get sent off in the 26th-minute, yet Juventus still score four straight goals in the second-half to take a 6-2 victory. The reverse in Turin featured two goals from Paulo Dybala as the only strikes in a 2-0 home win.
Julio Velazquez will have the enviable job of finding a way to contain Juventus’ attack, while also managing a way through the stern defensive unit. He will attempt to do so in a 4-4-1-1 formation that finds Kevin Lasagna as striker and Rodrigo De Paul supporting him as an attacking midfielder. Valon Behrami will be the man playing between Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo on the right side of the midfield, finding himself the crucial man to slow any developing attacks from the middle of the pitch. Argentine Ignacio Pussetto has been the strongest offensive player for Udinese as of late, whether it be as a forward or on the right wing, and will look to use his pace down the flank to create something for Lasagna in the middle.
Allegri’s team will come out in their 4-2-3-1 lineup, which allows them to defend, control and then finish up front. Their forward unit features Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Bernardeschi on the wings beside Dybala, while Croatian international Mario Mandzukic ready to find the net as the true striker. Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi will patrol the defensive side of the the midfield, as the pair have been able to expertly control the play to Juventus’ liking. The rock-solid back four are centered by veterans Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, having only conceded five goals in seven Serie A matches this season.

Allegri will have a few absences to deal with when setting his lineup. Douglas Costa will be out for this fixture as he continues to serve his four-game suspension for spitting at a Sassuolo opponent three weeks ago. Centre-back Daniele Rugani and Sami Khedira are sidelined with a rib injury and hamstring strain, while Leonardo Spinazzola is a long-term absentee as he rehabilitates his ACL tear.
Even though Juventus played on Tuesday, Allegri should have all his players at his disposal as Ronaldo and Chiellini both sat out, while others were rotated through substitution.
Midfielders Emmanuel Badu and Andrija Balic, and winger Svante Ingelsson are all long-term absentees through knee injury.
Juventus could easily be the best football team in the world at the moment, as their combination of offence, possession and defence is unmatched. Udinese will be far too preoccupied with the attack to worry about scoring goals themselves. When they do get a chance to move forward, look for the likes of Sissoko, Chiellini and Bonucci to shut them down.
