Man City v Man Utd Handicap Betting Tip
Manchester Derby Match Preview
The 43rd Premier League edition of the Manchester Derby kicks-off at 4:30pm at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon with the league-leading Manchester City aiming to keep their place atop the table. The visitors, winners of their last three matches, are looking to close the nine-point gap as they continue their turnaround after a poor start to the year.
Our Man City v Man United betting tip is United +1.5 on the Asian Handicap. Our Premier League expert explains why the Red Devils will make a match of it on Sunday after producing one of their biggest wins under Jose Mourinho this week.
Man City Form
Pep Guardiola’s squad have been nearly perfect this season in league play, winning nine and drawing two matches to stand alone in first place with 29 points.
Since a 0-0 draw at Anfield on October 7 the Citizens have been on an absolute tear, scoring at least five goals in three of their six matches.
The last week has seen them produce 12 goals alone, with Sunday’s 6-1 home victory over Southampton leading into a 6-0 destruction of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus each contributed three goals over those two games, with the latter grabbing a hat-trick against the Ukrainians.
Playing at the Etihad has produced a perfect six wins from six games this season, with City scoring at least three goals in four of those matches. They have also kept clean sheets in three, not allowing more than a single goal to any opponent this season.
Man Utd Form
Jose Mourinho has gone from clinging to his position as manager to getting back into the good graces of supporters, as United have seen a major change in both performance and attitude since the last international break.
Since their second-half comeback win at Newcastle on October 6, United have put their past problems behind them to win go undefeated domestically, including narrowly missing out on a 2-1 away win at Chelsea when they conceded a goal in the seventh-minute of added time to draw.
Their form was on full display on Wednesday night when they became the only team to defeat Juventus this season, knocking off the Italian juggernauts 2-1 in Turin. Despite going down 1-0 midway through the second-half, United scored twice just three minutes apart in the final 10 minutes to escape as the victors.
The win was their third-straight 2-1 win, as they defeated Everton and Bournemouth by the same score in Premier League action in the last two weeks.
Playing away from Old Trafford has produced a mixed 3W 1D 2L record this season in which United scored two goals in five of their six matches. Only a 2-0 away win at Burnley saw a finish under 2.5 total goals and have either team fail to score.
Manchester Derby Head-to-Head
The historical battle has seen the teams play 42 times during the inception of the Premier League and 176 times overall. United hold the advantage with 73 wins, 51 losses and 52 draws in the all-time meetings.
The away team managed to win both meetings last season, as City started off with a 2-1 victory last December. In the reverse at the Etihad, United came back from being down 2-0 in the first half with the help of two Paul Pogba goals before Chris Smalling gave the visitors a 3-2 victory.
Man City Tactics and Formation
Guardiola won’t need to change much strategically in a team that has been playing exceptionally well so far this season. His 4-3-3 formation has been the perfect tactic to use the speed and talent of his squad, especially the front three.
Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling have caused nightmares for defences as the speed of the wingers and the finishing ability of the Argentine make the perfect package for goals.
Fernandinho has been as solid as ever controlling the middle of the pitch, while David Silva will see the return of Ilkay Gundogan on the opposite side of the pitch boost the midfield’s ability to find space for the forwards.
Aymeric Laporte and John Stones will look to keep up their strong defensive play, hoping to shut down the surging Anthony Martial from getting any premium opportunities in front of Ederson.
Possible Man City Lineup: Ederson, Mendy, Stones, Laporte, Walker, Gundogan, Fernandinho, David Silva, Sterling, Aguero, Sane
Man United Tactics and Formation
Jose Mourinho has some injury concerns heading into the contest that could see him make some alterations to his lineup. Romelu Lukaku may be missing from the starting lineup as striker, so he may present his team in a more rounded 4-3-3 formation to spread the offensive responsibilities.
If Lukaku cannot play, look for Alexis Sanchez to team up with Martial and Juan Mata upfront. Martial has scored five goals in United’s last four Premier League matches and will be on the hunt for goals from the left-wing once again.
Pogba will be in his usual right-midfield position with Nemanja Matic in the middle and possibly Ander Herrera on the left side. The trio will have to make their way past Fernandinho if they want to play the ball forward and open up possibilities for their offence.
Luke Shaw and Ashley Young will be key to Sunday’s success for the Red Devils as the pair will be tasked with stopping Sterling and Sane along the wings. If they can match the speed of City’s pair, they can limit the host’s chances in front of goal.
Possible United Lineup: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Fred, Matic, Pogba, Mata, Sanchez, Martial
Man City Team News
City will be without Kevin De Bruyne in the midfield after the Belgian suffered yet another injury just weeks after coming back from a month-long absence.
Guardiola will have choices to make upfront after Gabriel Jesus produced a hat-trick midweek, but it is hard to see him getting the start over Aguero or Sterling. The Brazilian will likely come off the bench midway through the second-half.
Man Utd Team News
Lukaku has been missing for United’s past two matches and could be out for a third on Sunday as he continues to recover.
Pogba was the focus of injury speculation as well after he missed a team training session on Friday afternoon, however Mourinho described the reason as “just a small injury”.
Alexis Sanchez picked up a knock against Juventus but should be fine to play, while Antonio Valencia will also be available after missing the match in Turin.
Manchester Derby Prediction
United showed that the team is capable of winning big matches when they produced an incredible turnaround against one of the top teams in Europe on Wednesday night.
Their confidence has to be at an all-time high under Mourinho at the moment, especially with the way Martial is scoring league goals. City have been extremely solid all season, but their offensive outbursts over the last two weeks show just how powerful Guardiola’s team is.
We expect fireworks to fly in a Manchester Derby on Sunday afternoon that sees two in-form, dangerous squads facing off. We fancy goals to be scored by both sides in a riveting contest, but we will back Manchester United +1.5 as our Manchester Derby betting pick.
